over use of drugs/under use of parenting
Of course drug companies influence doctors to recommend more drugs, just like lobbyist influence congress. However, the battle begins at home by holding parents accountable for their actions. People don't seek relief from child psychologists or counselors when things are fine at home. Start pointing the finger at the parents and at home, hold them accountable, educate them and teach them that children typically aren't born with "issues". I agree drugs are used too often with children but you give parents a free pass. Parents have the most influence on our children and the reason they go for help is because they want things to be easier. Parents don't want to parent and do not want to believe n anyway that they are the primary cause of their children's behavior. Say what ever you want, make excuses for whatever you want but I truth be told that nearly every behavioral problem can be traced backed to poor parenting. Check the statistics in prison for starters. I have never known a child or an adult with a psychological disorder or character problem that could not be directly related to the quality of their parenting. I always amazes me that when parents seek relief for problems with their children they almost NEVER take responsibility for changing their own behavior while they seek outside help to change their child's behavior. Most childhood "problems" could be resolved quite nicely if the parents sought counseling for their deficiencies regarding their parenting skills before anything else.

ADHD is not an excuse for bad behavior
ADHD is not an excuse for being a jerk. If you have been a jerk before being diagnosed with ADHD you likely will be just as big of jerk after. ADHD medication will not give you a re-birth or make you into a more likable character. It may help you become a healthier more balanced person and allow you the proper focus to develop self awareness which in turn may help you learn to no be such a jerk but you are still who you are at your core. Your desire to progress and grow as a person and your willingness to use the ability to focus to pay attention to critical things in your life is the key to success. ADHD medication may make you a better x box player, or better at chatting on the web. What you choose to focus on will be up to you. Choosing to focus on the right things and to build character still come from self discipline. Ritalin will not give you self discipline or integrity so use the ability to focus to learn to focus on the right things.

Exercise
Exercising is one of the best medications for ADHD. There is nothing wrong with daily exercise and often ADD can be more pronounced as people exercise less. There is a natural calming of the mind that occurs through aerobic activity. You can walk, run, bike, roller blade, cross country ski, or any machine of your choosing at the gym. Initiating an exercise program may be very difficult in the beginning so finding something you absolutely love to do or find something you can do do take your mind off of the exercise. I used my stationary bike riding time for reading or listening to books or music on tape and even went as far as setting up a stand for my lap top computer so I could email, write or surf the web as I exercised. The time passes much more quickly. You will find though the more you exercise and the better shape you get into the easier it will be to continue. You will also notice improvements in you concentration levels almost immediately. Make it goal to do something aerobic everyday for 30 45 minutes. Just make the committment to it just like brushing your teeth and I think your life will change for the better.
ADHD does not have to limit anyone in anyway. If you have ADHD/ADD you can rest assured that it is not something that will limit you or hold you back from doing anything. If you learn to take advantages of your strengths you probably can reach the stars. I have lived 42 years to this point with ADD know that it is not something to be ashamed of or something that can be used as an excuse for life's struggles. All of us with ADHD may have to to work a little harder to keep things in order and to achieve our goals but everyone has to work hard to succeed anyway. This blog is going to be my attempt to lead anyone who wants to get the most out of their live while learning to overcome the obstacles that come along with a diagnosis of ADHD. The information profided my come from research studies, publications or psychology experts but most of it will come from me, and be based on my own journey dealing with ADHD. I was not diagonosed with ADHD until I was about 30 years old so I have seen both sides of life with and without treatment. I didn't grow up on medication or have special treatment or assistance to help with school or work and often life was very much a struggle. I would like others to not have to spend so many years living on what seemed like a never stopping treadmill. Everything I say will be honest and as truthful as can be and if I write about my own experience it will be my reality and how I dealt with certain issues. Remember, however, that we are all different and what has worked for me may not work for you or anyone else. The most important thing for anyone to do regarding ADHD is to become more educated about all things ADD, choosing the right help, and developing a much greater self awareness in order to monitor the positive or negative results of treatment. Your comments and ideas are welcomed and the more solutions that people have available to them, the more likely they will find the right one for their specific situation.
