A few more good books relating to depression and ADD

I have read all of these books and each of them has information and advice that can benefit everyone.

ADD, ADHD, Depression

ADHD and ADD can have depression as a comorbid Diagnosis.  If ADD has gone undiagnosed for a number of years depression may result in part due to the frustrations being unable to complete tasks, or stay in the same job long enough to get good at it.  Many of the symptoms of depression are similar to those of ADD.  It is not uncommon for one or the other to be misdiagnosed and give the wrong treatment.

The other scenerio is that both conditions exist in a patient and both need to be addressed in order to have a successful course of treatment.

I found an interesting article called "Six surprising signs of depresssion"
1. Achy joints and other unexplained pain

2. Gut reaction

3. Diving into work

4. Interviewing, but not getting the job

5. Paranoid thoughts
.6. Not being in the mood

Here is a great book that can help anyone with ADD and/or Depression.  It talks of way you can help yourself feel better.  It does not chastise the use of medication or therapy but makes suggestions that can work with your medication and treatment program.  There is evidence in research that these 6 steps can work as well as certain medications but I would caution anyone that there are times when medication is needed and extremely important.  Self-help takes a lot of motivation and determination and these things are often complete out of reach of a severely depressed person.  Therefore, it is critical for them to use medication properly and work toward helping themselves more gradually.  There is no shame in taking medication regardless of what popular opinion is and the opposite could be true.  It could be more shameful to not get help in the form of medication because of hubris or stubbornness.  You owe it to your self and your family to explore all options to get back to your normal state.

ADHD does not mean lack of intelligence

The Gift of Adult ADD: How to Transform Your Challenges & Build on Your Strengths

People with ADD are often very bright but have trouble moving consistently toward goals.  Dr Cordyn Clark founder of the ADD Clinic in Las Vegas, NV  wrote in his New Patient Guide about how some patients can understand certain subjects very quickly especially if it is of interest to them.  It can appear as they are lazy or not as bright if they are dealing with a subject that is not of interest to them.

Therefore it is extremely important for people with ADD to find work that they find interesting and stimulating.   I know this is true for everyone but the boredom of an uninteresting job can be torture to someone with ADD.  They may be interested in many things and seem to be unfocused but usually there are one or two things that have a greater appeal to them.

Finding your bliss is ever more important for people with ADD.

Gadgets that will help deal with ADD

The VuPoint Magic Wand Scanner

There are so many things you can use that will help you manage and succeed with ADD.  I have used these books or similar gadgets to change my life for the better.  Although ADD and ADHD seem to be diagnosed in greater numbers, the tools and gadgets to deal with the related issues are becoming more widely available.
I will list a few and give you a short review of the product and how they have helped deal with ADD.

This portable wand scanner is amazing for keeping track of receipts, paper work, sales orders and notes.  It is especially useful if you are on the go or running a business.  It runs on batteries and you scan documents by sliding the wand over the pages, notes or receipts.  You can store the documents on your micro chip (sold separately) until you have time to get home and transfer everything to your computer for storage.
VuPoint Solutions Magic Wand Portable Scanner (PDS-ST410-VP)  I have spent years accumulating receipts and notes for my business.  I often end up with a years worth of crumpled up receipts and purchase orders stuffed into a plastic bag.  Now with the Vupoint Magic Wand Scanner I can keep better records and have a much easier time preparing my tax returns.  Pick one up here:

It is definitely worth the money.  You will recover your cost many times over by having the receipts to take proper deductions at the end of the year.

More to follow in the next posts.

Let me know if anyone has had good luck with these or other devices.

ADHD and the Kindle, A perfect match.

Modern society and modern way of life is seen by many psychologists as one of the factors that has lead to an increase in the number of people diagnosed with ADD or ADHD.  As we have evolved away for the hunter and gathering way of life we have adopted a much more sedentary way of life.  The effects of less activity along with our shift away from eating omega 3 rich food, may be changing our brain chemistry leaving people with a higher risk of  depression or ADHD.
However, modern technology is making life with ADHD much less complicated.  The Kindle from Amazon, is one thing that could possibly become a necessity for a person with ADHD or ADD.

Many of the common, everyday things that are easy for non ADHD people, can be more difficult than people, especially when it has to do with school, learning and organization. But the Kindle is a godsend because Amazon it has made it so easy to read, take notes, highlight, buy and download books, and even put your own documents in as well.
Students and business people will love it as well.
You should check out the kindle anyway though whether you have Add or not because it is an amazing device.
